Keeping Your Home Secure

Keeping your home secure is your highest priority. The people, pets, and property in your home are incredibly important. As spring comes around, you are likely going to do a little bit of spring cleaning. Most people repaint or remodel a room or two, clean out some cupboards, and fix those small things needing to be fixed. However, there is one area most people neglect: they neglect to check and enhance the security of their homes.

Security Concerns

Your home has points of entry which will be a thief’s first instinct. Most burglars are opportunists; they will see something in a window and decide they want it. After a quick planning period, they’ll then commit their crime. That is often the extent of the planning, which is good news for you. It is easier to deter and block those kinds of criminals.

The most common points of entry into your home are windows and doors. The doors should have locks on them, obviously. Locksmiths in Llanelli also recommend you put chains on the doors. Chains on the doors are an added level of security. There are techniques for removing chains from the door, but they are not very easy and require some serious practice. Also, many chains are angled so as to make those techniques obsolete.

Other points of entry are typically your windows. Your windows are particularly vulnerable since they are breakable and often out of sight of the street. So you definitely need to have locks on your windows. Such locks should be professionally installed and reliable.

Security Mistakes

Many people make the same types of mistakes. One significant mistake homeowners tend to make is being predictable. They assume they are fairly insignificant and will not be targeted for crimes. Such an assumption makes them easier marks.

The first place a thief will look for access to your home is under the mat. If you leave a house key under your doormat, you are exposing yourself to thieves. Thieves will also look on the doorframe or on hard to reach parts of your porch. Storing a key on your porch in this manner is just inviting trouble.

They will then try your door. Most thieves are looking for an open door, not trying to find a lock to pick. If your doors and windows are all locked, the amount of time it has taken to test them will likely make a thief nervous. In many cases, that will be the end of their attempt.

Proactive Steps

Obviously, hiring professional locksmiths to install good locks is the first step in being proactive. Look for a quality locksmith who can install quality locks and also give you advice about how to further secure your home.

Your fences or retaining walls are going to be a vulnerability as well. If you’re worried you have a climbable privacy wall or fence, it is very easy to install a sharp deterrent at the top of the wall.
